Tobacco is, of course, one of the main causes for oral cancer , but alcohol and dietary habits add to the risk.

“Head and neck cancer, which is mainly caused due to tobacco consumption, constitutes around 40 per cent of the different types of cancer. According to experts in other countries, India has become a country with one of the greatest incidences of head and neck cancer and this particular kind of cancer has been ranked second to heart attacks as the cause of death,” said Dr Gopinath, surgical oncologist.

The consumption of all forms of tobacco is increasing day by day. A panel of city–based oncologists, which in the city on Friday, threw light on the significance of early intervention, detection, control and cure of the disease. The city–based oncologists receive patients addicted to chewing tobacco from as early as their childhood. Some of them may have lost half of their tongues, all of their teeth and part of the jaw to the disease.

In 2006, Biocon had come up with BIOMAB EGFR to be used in combination with radiation therapy or chemotherapy for patients, which had no incidences of severe skin rashes, hypomagnesaemia and other classical EGFR inhibition related side–effects.

Dr K Govind Babu, Medical Oncologist at Kidwai Institute of Oncology , said, “Earlier surgery was considered to be the only option for cancer, but now we have understood the multi–modality of the treatment.”
