Never Too Late for Cancer Tests

As part of the observation of World Cancer Day on February 4, cancer screening packages for men and women at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, will be extended to patients at subsidized rates from February 8–13.

Announcing the special scheme, Dr T S Raghu Raman said the Shirdi Sai Baba Cancer Hospital & Research Centre at Kasturba Hospital will offer subsidized cervical and breast screening package for women with Pap test and mammogram for Rs 390 and for men a special cancer screening package with prostate screening test PSA and consultation for Rs 190.

Dr Vidya Sagar, head of the department of radiotherapy and oncology, said that when detected early, cervical cancer is one of the most treatable cancers. A Pap test, quick, simple, and generally painless test, offers the best opportunity to detect cervical cancer at an early stage. On the other hand, mammogram is the best method to detect breast cancer.

Women above 40 years must undergo the screening every two years, added Dr Vidyasagar. Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in women followed by cervical cancer.
