Medical professionals and students from Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS), Whitefield, participated in a walkathon on Tuesday to create awareness about cancer. They walked from MG Road to CTO Circle. World Cancer Day is being observed on Wednesday.

Along the way, they distributed pamphlets and flyers. "We want to inform public on how to detect and prevent cancer," a participant said. Transport minister R Ashok inaugurated the walkathon.

"WHO estimates that cancer is the second leading cause of deaths in developed countries. It will be a disease to reckon with in India in some years," VIMS chief oncologist M S Ganesh said.

The institute is holding a free cancer screening camp till February 7. For details, call 28413381.
