Ghana: BCI Launches Breast Cancer Awareness Month

The Breast Care International (BCI), an International Non–Governmental Organization (INGO) has outlined a programme of activities for the commemoration of this year’s World Breast Cancer Awareness Month (Pink Month).

As part of the programme, women will be educated on breast cancer the monthly self breast examination and other awareness activities. Activities include a float through the principal streets of Mpraeso and Atibie in the morning, later followed with a durbar at Odwene Anoma Restaurant grounds at Nkawkaw in the Kwahu South District of Eastern Region at 10am on Saturday October 31, 2009.

This year’s celebration is under the theme “Imagine Life Without Breast Cancer” and focuses on an aggressive concerted effort from stake holders on breast cancer awareness creation.

Dr. (Mrs.) Beatrice Wiafe Addai, President of BCI and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Peace and Love Hospitals, in Accra and Oduom in Kumasi, said breast cancer mortality and morbidity is expected to be reduced by between 20 to 50 percent through the activities programmed for this year’s celebration. “The statistics are staggering; breast cancer is the leading cause of death among women worldwide,” she stated.
