They survived the deadliest of the disease through hope. On Friday, Pink Umbrella Walkathon organised by HCG group and Pink Hope was flagged off to promote awareness on breast cancer.

Pink Hope is an organization that was initiated a year ago by five women who survived breast cancer and decided to spread awareness about the disease – Rupa Venkatesh, Sashi Venkat, Dr Keerti Tewari, Heena and Dr Girija Nadagoudar.

Flagging off the marathon, Dr Ganesh Nayak, managing director, HCG, said: "Creating awareness on a regular basis is the need of the hour and we at HCG are keen to sustain this through innovative ways. Anupama Mannar, a member of the Inner Wheel Club and a recovery patient said: "Initially I was frightened to discover that I have breast cancer, but my treatment was successful. ‘Can–cer’ can be taken as ‘can–serve’ and spreading awareness is my way of doing that."

The walkathon initiative received an enthusiastic response of over 200 people. Students from four nursing schools participated. The Pink Umbrella, which was the symbol of the walkathon, is part of the "Pink merchandises" which includes t–shirts, ribbons and lapels. These products will be available in various malls across the nation and money collected from their sales will be used by HCG to help treat cancer patients who cannot afford treatment.
