Breast Cancer Scare for Policewomen

Times of India
Mumbai, India

A three-day police health camp for woman police constables and wives of policemen has revealed the increasing danger of breast cancer among women. Of the 109 policewomen, who underwent screening for the disease at the Nagpada Police Hospital, seven have suspected cancerous lumps.

The three-day police camp was held to commemorate International Women’s Day on March 8. Incidentally, not all the women with lumps in their breast may have cancer. It is important to undergo further tests to rule out the disease. Breast cancer is the biggest killer cancer among Indian women, especially in urban areas. “We are alarmed with such a huge percentage of the women having suspected breast cancer in our camp,’’ said police surgeon Dr S M Patil, who is in charge of the Nagpada Police Hospital. “Now, these seven women will be sent to Tata Memorial Hospital for further tests to establish whether they indeed have cancerous lumps,’’ he added. Most of the women were in the 35-45 year age group.

Dr Patil said the police camp was held to inculcate the need for routine breast examination among women and to remove the fear attached to cancer. Statistics show that most breast cancer patients in India are treated only during advanced stages. Every year, more than 80,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer but many approach the doctor in advanced stages. Due to the late diagnosis, more than 50% succumb to the disease, say doctors.
