"This is the first–of–its–kind breast cancer unit in a government set–up in the state and has advanced equipment for diagnosing and treating the condition," said Arun Jamkar, dean of the Sassoon hospital and B J Medical College.
Although cancer surgeries were being performed for long at Sassoon, the objective of launching this unit is to bring all required amenities for treating breast cancer under one roof. "There is no such unit in any other government hospital and we are the first to launch it," said Jamkar.
The unit will offer diagnosis of the ailment through mammography, which will be done free of cost, he said. Chemotherapy, which was not available at the hospital earlier, will be now offered to the patients, said Jamkar. "A Magnetic Resonance Imaging unit will be used for better detection and screening. We also plan to offer radiotherapy to patients suffering from breast cancer."
