A Bhayander couple killed themselves by consuming poison early on Friday morning after their 15–year–old daughter, Suparna Ganguly, died of blood cancer on Wednesday. The couple’s other daughter, Sweta Ganguly, 9, is now the sole surviving family member. Though her parents also forced the posion down her throat, it was flushed out of her at a nearby hospital.

Dwijen Ganguly, 38, who worked in a jewellery unit, and his wife Madhavi, 35, a homemaker, killed themselves at their flat in Ramchandra CHS, Navghar Road, Bhayander (East), at around 12.30 am.

Relatives said Dwijen’s sole aim in life was to cure Suparna and he spent over Rs 25 lakh on her treatment, selling his flat and village property to meet her medical expenses. The couple often said they would end their lives if Suparna died, which is why three relatives stayed at their home on Thursday night. But the Gangulys consumed the poison while the others slept.

“We would counsel him to think about his younger daughter’s future and not talk about death. But he stopped speaking to us after that (Suparna’s death),” a friend said. Sweta is yet to be told of her parents’ deaths.
