Pharmaceutical firms Natco Pharma, Zydus Cadila and Dr Reddy’s on Tuesday announced the launch of a generic version of Anastrozole, a drug used for the treatment of breast cancer, in the US market.

All three firms have launched their respective products in strength of 1 mg after getting approval from the US Food and Drugs Administration (USFDA), the companies said in three different statements on Tuesday . According to research firm IMS, the market for Anastrazole, which is patented by AstraZeneca and sold as Arimidex, is around $ 1 billion in the US.

Natco Pharma has launched the drug in the US through its marketing partners, it said, but did not name the associates. "The company is confident of gaining a reasonable share of the market," Natco Pharma said. Zydus Cadila also launched the drug in a strength of 1 mg after getting the USFDA’s nod and with this, the company now has 56 approvals from the US health regulator.

It also has filed 113 Abbreviated New Drug Applications (ANDAs) since the commencement of the filing process in FY2003-04. Another Indian firm, Dr Reddy’s, launched a generic version of Anastrozole, available in 30 count bottles, in the US market on June 28.
